Some­times it can be dif­fi­cult to tell the dif­fer­ence between falling in love and falling into love. This is espe­cially true at the begin­ning of a rela­tion­ship. It is easy to think that you have found true love as the inten­sity of infat­u­a­tion takes over your life. Love, how­ever, rarely comes on sud­denly. It is a slow, grad­ual process that can only hap­pen after the rush of infat­u­a­tion starts to ebb.

As you know, being in love, there are three main qual­i­ties go with: attrac­tion, close­ness, and com­mit­ment. Rela­tion­ships can be about any or all of these.

Attrac­tion is the “chem­istry” part of love. It’s all about the phys­i­cal — even sex­ual — inter­est that two peo­ple have in each other. Close­ness is the bond that a cou­ple devel­ops when they feel com­fort­able enough to share thoughts and feel­ings that they don’t share with any­one else. The con­nec­tion between them deep­ens to include qual­i­ties like trust, respect, and hon­esty. Com­mit­ment is loy­alty, together you’ve made a deci­sion to stick with each other through the ups and downs that are part of any relationship.

Rela­tion­ships that are based on attrac­tion alone are usu­ally more about fun and infat­u­a­tion than real love.
