I found the book “Doomsday and Life After Death” that written by S.BASHIR-UD-Din Mahmood is fascinating. It is a great write-up. Have you read it? If you haven’t, I highly recommend you buy a copy for yourself and read it.
For me, I found this book is a valuable source of inspiration, it brings me closer to the Al-Quran, the supreme source of knowledge. I like author’s approach – he is using the way of in-depth study of the Al-Quran with reference to the scientific discoveries in knowledge to bring the modern man closer to the God’s Revelation. I believe no matter you are a muslim or non-muslim, you will be glad to read it.
The book divided into 4 part, 27 chapters, only 236 pages. It is a systematic study of the complex realities of Life, Life after Death and Doomsday; ultimate fate of mankind and of the Earth, the Solar System and the Universe, in the Light of latest scientific findings; pointing out new horizons of thought for science; and developing a comprehensive understanding of the future, for believers and non-believers alike.
As it said, all living things are set of life and matter, and all human beings are the set of life, matter and soul. There is a divine purpose behind everything, nothing is created for nothing. There are several verses in the Holy Quran have emphasized it is a purpose and meaning in the creation and end of the universe.
“We have not created, the heavens and the earth, And all that is in between them, Purposeless, Only those who deny (the truth) imagine so” 38 (27)
If you think about it, doomsday and life after death is a fascinating subject. Human soul, however, even more mystery. Recall back our interesting discussion about human soul, it is wonderful to see how we understand it differently.
Imam Al-Ghazali, the famous Muslim scholar of the 11th century A.D. differentiated between the human soul and human life; the latter being the result of bio-chemical reactions between different elements, and therefore perishable with their disorder.
However soul is a kind of ‘Energy Being’, other than life, which determines the human personality. It is essential ‘Me’, distinct from the material elements of the body, something inspired into the foetus externally at a certain stage of its development in the womb of the mother. The soul is not a static being but a dynamic living being which develops over the passage of time along lines it may choose for itself.
As for the question about the real nature of the soul, our knowledge will always remain incomplete, it said in the Holy Quran verse 17 (85).
“They ask thee of the soul, Say, “The soul is an order of my Lord, You have been given, But a little knowledge of this” 17 (85)
What we understand from this verse is that soul will always remain a mystery and beyond the complete comprehension of our human mind. However we may have a limited capability to know the working of soul.
In this regard the prophet Muhammad, may Allah’s blessing and peace be upon him, said “whoever knows their self, truly knows their Lord”.
Allah is Great!
