Mother’s Day in Thailand



Today, 12th August is her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand’s birthday. The Queen, who rules not only the brains but also the hearts of the people, has earned deep respect for herself with her hard work for the welfare of Thai society and crafts. The citizens of Thailand have deep reverence for her.

First, I would like to wish Her Majesty the Queen a happy birthday! As she is regarded as a mother to all Thai people, we also celebrate 12th August as National Mother’s Day. Thus, I would like to wishing all the mothers a day as bright and wonderful as you are – Happy Mother’s Day to You!

This is the day held in celebration of the birth in 1932 of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. One could be forgiven for thinking that every day of this particular year will be dedicated to the Diamond Jubilee of King Bhumibol in celebration of His Majesty’s sixty years on the throne, but come the 12th of August, the spotlight will focus on Queen Sirikit – “The Mother of The Nation.”

At school yesterday, the students took part in a special ceremony to honor Her Majesty. The school principal first pays homage to a portrait of Her Majesty the Queen. Then the teachers, representing “all mothers” are presented with flowers. The ceremony ends with sing special Mother’s Day songs and traditional Thai dancing.

For the people of Thailand, the Queen’s Birthday is an occasion to express their love and respect for her. The whole kingdom is soaked in joyous atmosphere on the day. Buildings and homes are adorned with flags, light and portraits of the Queen. People pray to God for their beloved Queen and wish her good health and happiness. Swarms of people come out on the streets of Bangkok in the evening, and light firecrackers. The grandeur of the Grand Palace and Ratchadamnoen Avenue area of Bangkok is beyond description.

At the same time, the Thai government will hold a series of celebrative events from Her Majesty the Queen’s birthday to His Majesty the King’s birthday to promote unity among the people – Long Live Her Majestic Queen Sirikit.

Again, Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers and wish you have a great day!
