Success, by itself, is relative, is a subject thing. Personally, I don’t think there is right or wrong about how we define success. What success means to you might be different from what it means to me or to other people, this is perfectly fine.
For me, I think success is doing well that which you value, it is about when you become a blessing to others and it should be measured as the positive impact a person’s work that have upon the lives of other people. However, if oneself can’t make huge impact on others, I think it’s better to define our goals within our limits initially.
Setting goals can be earning money, generate traffic and build up a community around a blog, or at least make some small impact on our readers, example. When you reach your goals, it is called success.
People often see money and success together, but I do not see that. I think God has taken care of the money, no matter what we do, we will earn the amount God has set for us, so do what you love, because when you do that, others will see the passion in your eyes, in your words and in your actions, and from that they will be influenced and you will become successful.
And because we are different person, thus, each person has his or her own understanding towards success. As I mentioned earlier, for some people, money is the only reason and determinant for success, they equate money with success (making a lot of money or achieving status). While others value different things, whatever you value, you have to work towards it.
In regarding to money focus, to some extent, it is necessary to have and it is important to fulfill at least basic needs. There is nothing wrong with a monetary goal. You can’t make influence if you are broke, and heavily in debt, but it should not be the be-all and end-all. By that, success is living on your own terms.
John Wooden once said “Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable.”
That being said, I think it is useful to discuss about such definitions, because it helps us to analyze whether we are moving in the right direction, below these opinions are from some of my Facebook rock stars, see what they said about success.
Jaza – success is u do everything according to your wish perfectly.
Bob – the real success is, the one who can obey ALLAH and follow the SUNNAH of RASULULLAH 100%. Like those SAHABAH RADIALLAHU ANHUM. ALLAH said about them in the QURAN ‘RADIALLAHU ANHUM WA RADHU ANH’ The real success is to enter JANNAH by obeying ALLAH and RASULULLAH S.A.W.
Anthony – success is a subjective thing, and, thus, based on illusion. Someone’s lack of financial success could be based on countless things. But so it depends on the context. With regards to religion, I’d say that success is our ability to cultivate health the way nature provides/provided our species means to that we’ve abandoned for a system that will only strip our lands, and, that will forever leave the majority of the world’s populations the victims of the pseudo-ratiocination of leaders tied to the sinking ships of the landscapes of the world, and their potentials.
Rizwan – To me success is to bring smile to somebody then to be a successful business tycoon. By the way success leads to path of loneliness and grief, only those can understand who is on top.
Dilep – SUCCESS is to achieve your Ambition in life.
Inkam – Success is the end of whole Process.
Finally, often, when we see successful people, we tend to see just the result and not the journey they took to get to where they are now. There is a lot of sweat and hard work that goes into becoming successful. There is no achievement without hard work. So, if you want to become a successful person in whatever you do – find time do some self-reflection and analyse what’s going on in your life, to see what needs changing, and then to make those changes.
This leads us to one question: “What is success to you, and are you successful?”
